The Big Art Idea
Zeitgeist discussion between Cathy Lomax and Alli Sharma - renowned artists, curators and directors of independent and innovative artist-led Transition Gallery and magazine Garageland & Arty.
at ASC Studios
Cathy Lomax is an artist, writer and curator. She runs Transition Gallery in east London and edits and publishes two art and culture magazines, Arty and Garageland.
Lomax completed her MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins in 2003 and immediately set up Transition Gallery. Alongside Transition, Lomax is a practising artist. Her work often takes the form of groups of paintings, which may be combined with other elements to create fragmented narratives that chart a curious contemporary longing for something unobtainable. Her recent exhibitions include 2010 Jerwood Drawing Prize and The Secret of England’s Greatness at HangART-7 in Saltzburg, Austria.
Alli Sharma is an artist based in London. She is also co-director of Transition Gallery and contributing editor of Garageland magazine. Sharma is involved in curating exhibitions for the gallery, including Fade Away, which toured to Gallery North, Newcastle and was documented in About Painting in 2011.
Sharma graduated from Central St Martins in 2007 with BA Fine Art.In her practice she often takes an ambiguous glance back at her own history in order to explore notions of identity, longing and loss, unearthing memories to create revealing, gestural paintings. She recently exhibited at The Perfect Nude, Wimbledon Space, London.
