In Use

Swedish artist Anna Moderato presents sculpture and choreography that investigates the limitations of the human body through repetitious action, and the contrast between human and mechanical movement.

at Acme Project Space

Taking Yvonne Rainer’s seminal dance pieces of the 1960s as its point of departure, In Use features new sculptures conceived as elements for non-professional performers to interact with. Live performances and a screening programme that extend the contemporary and historical themes raised by Moderato’s work complement the exhibition.

On Friday 22 June from 7pm, an evening of performances presenting new works by Mary Hurrell and Lucy Clout will bring Moderato’s work into conversation with two artists who share similar concerns. Mary Hurrell’s Solos uses the gallery’s glass frontage and will act as a screen, into which the public will view the performance. Extending the gallery architecture and composing object, body and movement, Hurrell will explore physical and psychological duality and the body as language. A Tour of the Space by Lucy Clout is described by the artist as a private performance. For this work individual audience members enter into a singular dialogue with the artist in scheduled appointments. Focusing on the intricacies of everyday movement, Clout will raise the audience members’ awareness of their personal space. Attendance to the performance is free but requires booking in advance.

Please email to be assigned a 10 minutes slot between 7-9pm.

A screening programme at Hackney Picturehouse on Sunday 24 June from 8pm will include Daria Martin’s Soft Materials (2004), Jørgen Leth’s The Perfect Human (1967) and Yvonne Rainer’s Hand Movie (1966). The selection of films investigate the body’s relationship to technology and human physicality, and will situate Moderato’s work within a historical context.
