A Love Letter to Myself

A book and an art object, a series of original paintings and a textual journey - a journey from obsession and addiction, towards an exploration of "self-love" by Sarah Nabarro.

at Ma-Wah Gallery

A Love Letter to Myself is a visual and spiritual journey on paper in which Nabarro questions how we live, the nature of happiness, life, death, creativity, and destruction as the cause of coming into being. Crossing the boundaries between the written word, painting, book, and art, this exhibition brings together paintings from the book with the original text. As with all Nabarro’s work, A Love Letter to Myself is, at its heart, a space to examine oneself and reflect upon existence.

Originally a figurative painter, Nabarro's work has moved between abstraction and figuration, always with the intention of creating work in which she may discover more about who, or what, we are collectively. Through this process, she poses where – and if – the personal and the universal may meet. Nabarro is interested in space as a site of change, a site for potential and creativity and as a place in which we may connect better within.

A Love Letter to Myself has provided a springboard for the artist, inspiring further explorations combining text with paint, while looking at ideas around space. Her work has been influenced by the Abstract-Expressionists, the Neo-Expressionists, as well as the Chinese Scholar-painters of the 10th-13th centuries.Sarah Nabarro trained at the Motley School of Theatre Design and at Hertfordshire University, having read Social Anthropology at Cambridge University. She is based in London.
