For 2023, Art Licks initiated and produced a project between local Gillamoor CE Primary School and artist Charlotte Salt.
In spring, the children took part in offsite workshops with Charlotte, together making a series of ceramic artworks that celebrate key landmarks in their village.
During the workshops, each child made a tile and collectively these tiles make-up seven ceramic pieces displayed at the front of their school for the public to see. The work depicts the school, the pub, sundial, St Aiden's church, the War Memorial, Methodist chapel and ‘Surprise View’. The work was launched in June and is on display for the summer.
Charlotte Salt is an artist and ceramicist based in North Yorkshire, and is part of the studio collective A.H.H. in Malton. Charlotte sees the act of making as empowering as it offers an opportunity to shape our environment in a meaningful way. Fascinated by many genres of art, drawing on wide-ranging influences Charlotte's clay work is intuitively hand-crafted using traditional, coiling, slab-building, modelling and pinching techniques.
The project was funded by Arts Council England and North Yorkshire Council.
